Photos: Christmas Cheer in a Most Unlikely Location

Each November, Larry Washington decorates the freight elevator in the DePaul Center with an explosion of Christmas cheer. Washington, who has operated this particular elevator for more than a decade, is accustomed to a flood of visitors in November and December as DePaul faculty and staff stop by for a joyful ride. “People like to bring me stuff,” Washington says. “One guy brought me a Feliz Navidad sign, and another guy’s daughter made me a Hanukkah plaque.” Most visitors want their photo taken next to the mini Christmas tree. “If they come back the next day, I give them a copy of the photo,” Washington notes. As for the other photo? It gets added to an endlessly proliferating collage of merry faces adorning the elevator walls.
