Video: When Deaf Actors Perform in a Musical

It’s one thing to see a show on Broadway—the aftermath of months of rehearsals, press junkets, hair and makeup, and costume changes—but what’s it like while the show is coming together? Take a sneak peek behind the scenes of Deaf West Theatre’s production of “Spring Awakening” at Brooks Atkinson Theater, which opened on Sept. 27. Ryan Conway (MUS ’11) served as general manager of the show, which was co-produced by Hunter Arnold (SNL ’10) and Cody Lassen (SNL ’06), a recent 14 Under 40 honoree in DePaul Magazine. As the video above explains, this particular version of the musical brings together deaf and hearing actors. Learn more about the effect of this dynamic on the audience in this New York Times review and view tech rehearsal and backstage photos below.
